PAU Honors Its Rich Heritage with Traditional Games
Punjab News
The Directorate of Students’ Welfare at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), in collaboration with the PAU Heritage Games Club, hosted an exuberant celebration of heritage and folk games on the university campus. This thoughtfully organized event sought to breathe new life into Punjab’s traditional sports, which are increasingly being overshadowed by Western influences. The initiative aimed to reconnect younger generations with these energetic and culturally rich pastimes, preserving an essential part of the region’s identity and history.
An array of traditional games was carefully curated to cater to both boys and girls, ensuring inclusive participation. Girls demonstrated their skills in games like Steppu and Kotla Chapaki, which are deeply rooted in Punjab’s vibrant cultural traditions. Meanwhile, boys competed in Bandar Killa and Pithoo, showcasing their physical and strategic abilities. In addition to these gender-specific competitions, mixed-gender events such as Tin Tangri Daurh (three-legged race), Rumaal Chukna, and Rassa Kashi (tug-of-war) brought a unique sense of camaraderie and teamwork. These games not only highlighted the competitive spirit of the participants but also underscored the importance of collaboration and mutual support.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor of PAU, who underscored the pivotal role of folk games in safeguarding Punjab’s cultural heritage. He eloquently articulated that these traditional games are more than recreational activities; they embody the values, customs, and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Dr. Gosal stressed that engaging with such heritage activities enables individuals to form a deeper connection with their cultural roots, fostering a sense of pride and understanding of their unique identity and historical legacy.
Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal encouraged students to actively focus on enhancing their motor, physical, and mental capabilities, emphasizing the importance of these skills in excelling at traditional games. He highlighted that consistent practice and dedication would not only help students achieve excellence in these heritage sports but also pave the way for their continued participation in future competitions. His inspiring words underscored the broader benefits of such activities, including improved fitness, discipline, and a deeper appreciation for cultural traditions.
Dr. Nirmal Jaura, Director of Students’ Welfare, reflected on the inherently communal essence of heritage games, pointing out their role in fostering meaningful social interaction, teamwork, and friendly rivalry among participants. He emphasized that these games bring people together, encouraging mutual cooperation and a sense of unity, which are vital in today’s fast-paced and often isolating world. The event also garnered the presence of several other esteemed dignitaries, including Dr. Rupinder Kaur, Associate Director (Culture), and Dr. Kanwaljit Kaur, Deputy Director of Physical Education, who lent their support and expertise to the occasion.
Adding to the success of the event, Dr. Ashoo Toor, President of the University Speakers’ Forum, skillfully conducted the proceedings with enthusiasm and precision. Her seamless coordination ensured the event unfolded smoothly, leaving participants and attendees with a memorable and enriching experience. Together, the combined efforts of the dignitaries and organizers highlighted the significance of preserving and celebrating Punjab’s cultural heritage through such initiatives.
